Nov 7th - Winchester, VA (Dave-Bob's BBQ) - Danni Leigh
***Country singer presents concert By Stephanie M. Mangino The Winchester Star
WINCHESTER — Danni Leigh is back in the United States after four years in Europe, and one of her first stateside shows will take place just north of the country singer’s hometown of Strasburg.
The honky-tonk woman, who prizes traditional country music sounds, will perform Saturday at Dave-Bob’s BBQ and Such at 1080 Millwood Pike (U.S. 50) east of Winchester.
Leigh, 39, returned to Nashville, Tenn., with her husband Mike Stevenson and is focusing on building her American career, which she launched as a songwriter, co-writing Tracy Byrd’s 1998 country hit “I Wanna Feel That Way Again.”
“It’s been a long time since I performed in the United States,” she said in a recent telephone interview.
She has met with success overseas, with “A Quarter Over You,” the single from her most recent album “Masquerade of a Fool,” hitting the top spot on European country music charts.
The Winchester show will be one of Leigh’s few performances this year, although she’s negotiating with booking agents and hopes next year will be filled with shows nationwide.
But at the moment, the 1988 graduate of Strasburg High School is excited to see friends and family. “Obviously, coming home is always a nice thing for me to be able to do.”
When she returns, she’ll bring her traditional sound and appreciation for country music’s past.
Leigh said some of the first country recordings she heard as a child were by Winchester native Patsy Cline, and her early influences included people such as Cline, Buck Owens, and Merle Haggard.
She deeply appreciates her musical forebears. “You have to hang on to the icons of country,” she said.
Sometimes, you even get to perform with them.
Leigh noted that she has shared the stage with many, including singing “Seven Spanish Angels” with Willie Nelson, who recently performed in the Patsy Cline Theatre at Winchester’s Handley High School. She has also performed with artists such as Charlie Daniels and George Jones, she said.
While Leigh has made an impact as a songwriter and performer, she said the latter is one of her favorite things — the force behind her career, which she started working on shortly after her high school graduation. She left Strasburg at 19 to live in Orlando, Fla., to figure out her artistic voice before making a move to Nashville.
There, she became friends with Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle, eventually singing in his ska (Jamaican-style) band the Fenwicks, even though he first encountered her as a honky-tonk singer.
She moved on to Nashville, where she began her singing and songwriting career. She penned the Byrd hit and released her first album “29 Nights.”
Although her record label, Decca, folded, she remained in Nashville for her second album, “A Shot of Whisky and a Prayer,” released on Sony/Monument records, and her third album, 2002’s “Divide and Conquer” on Audium Records.
Later in 2002, she moved to Austin, Texas, living and working there until the move to Europe. Her husband is also originally from the Austin area, she said.
While her career is in country, Leigh said she appreciates a host of musical genres, enjoying classic rock, country, blues, some jazz, classical, and opera.
She’s not too fond of music she feels is overly produced, though, preferring a rootsy sound.

Danni Leigh will show off her sound at Dave-Bob’s Saturday. Seating begins at 8 p.m. for the 9 p.m. show. Tickets cost $5 to $25. For more information, call 540-678-0BBQ.
