Orkney Springs, VA (Shenandoah Valley Music Festival) -
***Friday, July 17, 2009 Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul @ 8:00 p.m. (Gates open at 6:00 p.m.)
The woman who defines Celtic fiddling for a generation of Americans returns triumphantly to the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival! Eileen Ivers has been called the queen of the Irish fiddle, its Jimi Hendrix, the pre-eminent exponent of the Irish fiddle in the world today, and its future. Don't doubt that high praise, because she proves every word of it over and over with sold-out audiences that rock the house!
The nine-time All-Ireland Fiddle Champion and her band Immigrant Soul are best known for the amazing voyages they take with their unique sound. She takes a Celtic tune on a wild ride infused with Latin, Caribbean, jazz and world music flavor before bringing it all back home to where she started, proving the Boston Globe's opinion of her as "a beautifully inventive fiddler."
Ms. Ivers, a Celtic fiddle prodigy since her wee years, burst into the public's eye as a founding member of the band Cherish the Ladies and as the musical star for the cultural phenomenon, Riverdance.
Hailed as one of the great innovators and pioneers in the Celtic and World music genres, she has, for almost two decades, changed the way people think of the Celtic fiddle. Billboard magazine called her a "sensation."
Her band, Immigrant Soul, features the deeply soulful vocals of Tommy McDonnell, a former member of the Originial Blues Brothers band and several other internationally known Celtic and World music performers. "A fine lot they are," said the Richmond Times Dispatch.

***Saturday, July 18, 2009 The Dixie Hummingbirds  @ 8:00 p.m.
(Gates open at 6:00 p.m.)
The Dixie Hummingbirds are an institution. While they have always remained deeply rooted in the gospel tradition, their influence has made itself known far and wide in American popular music. Perhaps the great singer, the late Isaac Hayes put it most eloquently: "In the beginning, after the Word...there was the Dixie Hummingbirds."
The group, which celebrated its 80th anniversary last year, broke into the popular consciousness in 1966 when they prompted a standing ovation at the Newport Folk Festival. Still greater fame was in store a few years later when they backed Paul Simon on his smash hit "Loves Me Like a Rock." The 'Birds own rendition of the tune won them a Grammy in 1974.

***Friday, July 24, 2009 "Charlie Chaplin at the Symphony"  @ 8:00 p.m.
(Gates open at 6:00 p.m.)
Imagine — the pavilion at Orkney Springs turned into a silent movie house with a full symphony providing the soundtrack!
On Friday, July 24th, the Festival will present Dan Kamin in his new show "Charlie Chaplin at the Symphony." In the first part, a classical concert goes horribly wrong, as Dan plays an annoying mime who battles conductor Grant Cooper for control of the orchestra. It's like a silent movie come to life, and even the usually deadpan musicians get into the act.
Then, in Act Two, Dan unmasks and breaks his silence to introduce two Chaplin classics, "Easy Street" and "The Immigrant." Newly restored versions of these hilarious and touching films from 1917 come to life as never before, with beautiful original scores composed by Cooper, music director of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
This multi-media extravaganza is a tip of the bowler hat to America's greatest movie comedian, Charlie Chaplin. There's no one better to do it, either, because Dan Kamin actually taught Charlie Chaplin how to walk. Not the real Charlie Chaplin or course. Dan trained Robert Downey Jr. for his Oscar-nominated performance as the comedian, and he also created Johnny Depp's comedy moves in "Benny and Joon." And, as you'll see, he's no slouch in the physical comedy department himself.
Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra at the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival with this special program — an evening of great music, great movies, hearty laughter and lasting memories!

*** Saturday, July 25, 2009 "Romantic Passions"  @ 8:00 p.m.
(Gates open at 6:00 p.m.)
Celebrate Valentine's Day in July with one of the most outstanding works of the Romantic period. The beautiful young Ukranian pianist, Valentina Lisitsa, will play Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1.
Ms. Lisitsa, a graduate of the famed Kiev Conservatory, has performed in some of the world's most prestigious venues. The Chicago Tribune says that her "technique glitters like cut glass."
The evening will also feature Beethoven's "Symphony No. 7" and Mozart's "Overture to the Marriage of Figaro." This program is sure to highlight the enormous talent of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra and Ms. Lisitsa.
This summer marks the 30th anniversary of the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra at the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival. Thirty years of music — thirty years of memories. www.fairfaxsymphony.org.

Jul 8th to 19th - Winchester, VA (SU) - Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre at Shenandoah University, Ohrmstrom-Bryant Theatre 540-665-4569
Lyrics by Tim Rice * Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Joseph had prophetic dreams and was given a coat of many colors by his doting father. It was magnificent, but Joseph’s brothers became so jealous of his prophecies and his splendid coat that they sold him into slavery in Egypt. There he rose from the lowly status of house slave to become Pharaoh’s principal advisor because of his great gift for interpreting dreams. The authors of Jesus Christ Superstar have created a soft rock fantasy based on Joseph and his brethren and turned it into a rollicking pastiche of vaudevillian turns, country and western, calypso, 50’s rock and roll and acid rock.

Jul 22nd - Front Royal, VA (Boggs Chapel) - Voices of Youth
7 p.m. July 22 in Boggs Chapel at Randolph Macon Academy in Front Royal.
***Voices of Youth: Music with a message  By Stephanie M. Mangino  The Winchester Star
WINCHESTER — Some local students will mix music with a message during the coming weeks as part of Voices of Youth.
The United Methodist Church provides young people with an opportunity to perform mission work and then sing at church districts around Virginia.
The 24-year-old group has taken young people around the world to help others. Typically, the group alternately engages in foreign and domestic projects every other year, according to Jenny White of Frederick County, the daughter of Steve and Barbara White.
Jenny, 17, spoke as she prepared to start her second Voices of Youth trip, which began Tuesday. On her first, last year, she was part of a the group that went to Brazil.
She was nervous to travel without her family to another country, but she said people grow and learn when they get out of their comfort zones.
While some trips involve physical labor, others are more personal. The Brazil trip focused on having young people interact with street children, said Jordan Markwood. He is a Winchester-area resident and team leader for this year’s effort, which is taking young people to Mississippi to help people still recovering from Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which devastated the Gulf Coast.
Last year in Brazil, members of the group — 30 to 40 young people are usually chosen to participate — helped to repair a camp for children and worked with them on arts and crafts activities, too.
Although she couldn’t speak Portuguese, Jenny said, she and the children could understand one another after they had spent some time together.
For Jenny, participating has brought together her two passions. “I love to sing and I love mission work,” said the rising Millbrook High School senior and member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church.
This year, she is also part of the youth staff for Voices of Youth.
It’s Markwood’s seventh trip with the group — he has been a part of it as a student and a staff member — but this is his first time as team leader.
He has traveled to England, Estonia, Brazil, and Mexico on the foreign trips, and has done work in Florida on the domestic side. Markwood, a middle school music teacher in Loudoun County, is also the worship arts coordinator at Round Hill United Methodist Church in Frederick County.
In Mississippi, he’ll lead a group that will help to install laminate flooring at one home and to complete exterior painting at another.
The trip to Mississippi is Katie Moss’s first with VOY.
The 15-year-old daughter of Rob and Debbie Moss of Frederick County said she hopes to meet people like her, who love music, singing, God, and helping people.
“I’ve heard nothing but great things about Voices of Youth,” said Katie, a student at James Wood High School and member of Burnt Factory United Methodist Church.
When the group returns from Mississippi, it will sing throughout the state, with a stop scheduled in the Winchester District — 7 p.m. July 22 in Boggs Chapel at Randolph Macon Academy in Front Royal.
Young people must not only receive a series of recommendations to be in Voices of Youth, but also audition.
However, a person with musical ability and a passion for mission work may win out over someone who is just a great musician, Markwood said.
Those involved must also be dedicated to teamwork, since the group spends about 31/2 weeks together over the summer, added Markwood, who for the first time won’t perform with the group because of his responsibilities as team leader.
Instead, the 25-year-old will “take in the music and all it has to share.”
While VOY provides assistance to others, it has also given Jenny White a future goal:
“I’ve decided that I want to go into mission work as a profession.”
